Callers to our 1-800-NATIONAL® Technical Assistance Hotline frequently ask the following questions about veneer plaster:

Can gypsum plaster be applied directly to wallboard?
> Can Kal-Kore® veneer plaster baseboard be painted like wallboard?
> How long after the application of a gypsum veneer plaster must I wait before painting can begin?

Can gypsum plaster be applied directly to wallboard?
No. Gypsum plaster will not properly bond to wallboard face paper. Gypsum lath, such as National Gypsum's Kal-Kore wallboard, must be used when a board product is specified. Gypsum lath has special absorptive face paper designed to permit a strong plaster bond.

Note: Wallboard back paper is not lath face paper. Do not reverse wallboard and plaster backside of wallboard.

Can Kal-Kore® veneer plaster baseboard be painted like wallboard?
No. Kal-Kore is a plastering base having a blue absorptive face paper surface designed to permit rapid trowel application and strong bond of gypsum veneer plaster. National Gypsum Company has no test data on direct application of paint products to the Kal-Kore plaster base. Any such application, with or without a sealer, is at the risk of the customer.

How long after the application of a gypsum veneer plaster must I wait before painting can begin?
Under good drying conditions, veneer plaster may be painted 48 hours after application. It is essential that veneer plaster be sound and completely dry before painting. Alkali-resistant primers specifically formulated for use over new veneer plaster will permit decorating with oil or latex type paints.

Note: Conventional lath and plaster systems require a 30-day drying time before painting.
