
Nelson Elected Chairman of National Gypsum Company
National Gypsum Company’s Board of Directors has elected Thomas C. Nelson chairman
of the company, succeeding C. D. Spangler, Jr., who will remain on the board as
a director. Nelson will retain his position as president and chief executive officer
of the company.
Nelson joined the company in 1995 as executive vice president and chief financial
officer. He was elected vice chairman of the board in 1996 and president and CEO
in July 1999. He also serves on the board of The Business Roundtable and is chair
of the Policy Advisory Board at the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard
University.
Selected as a White House Fellow, he served as assistant to the secretary of defense
for special projects from 1992-93. At the conclusion of his service, he was awarded
the Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service.
Active in the Charlotte community, Nelson serves on the boards of the Boy Scouts,
Charlotte Chamber, The Foundation for the Carolinas, United Way, and Carolinas HealthCare
System.
Headquartered in Charlotte, National Gypsum is a leading supplier of wallboard,
interior finishing products, and cement board to the construction industry. It has
a network of 31 plants in North America, as well as its own paper mills and gypsum
mines and quarries.
