National Gypsum Recognizes Buckman Laboratories
National Gypsum Company (NGC) has selected Buckman Laboratories as its Supplier
of the Year for the company’s gypsum and paper business units. Headquartered in
Memphis, Tenn., Buckman earned the award for its work with NGC’s Pryor, Okla., paper
plant.
Buckman supplies the Pryor plant with several chemicals used in the paper production
process (ASA sizing, retention, drainage and formation polymers, biocides, dry strength
and stickies control additives). Pryor and the company’s three other paper mills
produce facing paper from recycled stock. The paper is used on the front and back
sides of gypsum wallboard. National Gypsum is a leading producer of wallboard.
During 2004, Buckman helped Pryor reduce its direct chemical costs over 20 percent.
Working with the supplier allowed the plant to improve machine output and uptime
two percent. Pryor was also able to reduce weight by 6 percent and increase line
speed by 10 percent for High Flex grade paper. High Flex wallboard can be bent for
use in curved walls and arches.
“The quality of our paper is critical in the overall performance of our wallboard
product,” said Ray Syracuse, director of Purchasing for NGC. “Demand for wallboard
is high and improvements in paper productivity help us meet that demand. Our company
has been recognized by customer groups for its on-time deliveries and high-quality
products. Buckman Laboratories has helped us achieve that level of performance.”
Buckman also implemented a Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) program, installed specialty
equipment systems at no charge, and supported Pryor’s safety program by conducting
periodic material handling sessions.
Buckman was the first NGC Supplier of the Year selected through the company’s new
vendor rating system. On the Supplier Evaluation ScoreCard program, Buckman earned
a 95.53 percent rating. The ScoreCard measures performance in key areas:
on-time deliveries, percent of rejected materials,
compliance with certificate of analysis policy,
accuracy in transactions,
electronic billing and payment capability,
customer survey results, and
cost reduction and added value.
“Buckman achieved maximum scores in virtually all categories,” Syracuse said. “Buckman
demonstrated a strong commitment to National Gypsum’s goals and vision.”
Headquartered in Charlotte, National Gypsum is a leading supplier of wallboard,
interior finishing products, and cement board to the construction industry. It has
a network of 31 plants in North America, as well as its own paper mills and gypsum
mines and quarries.
