National Gypsum Wins Information Technology Award

CIO magazine today announced National Gypsum Company as a recipient of its 2005 CIO 100 award. This year’s award recognizes companies which have taken a bold initiative in using information technology. National Gypsum’s winning entry is its customer website – ngc4me.com.

The award will be presented on August 23 in San Diego, CA, and CIO magazine’s current issue features an in-depth interview with National Gypsum CEO Tom Nelson. This special issue provides readers with insight into the business and information technology practices that gave the honorees their competitive edge.

The 100 companies earning the award completed an extensive online application. The judges were looking for entries which exhibited a willingness to take risks in using information technology to increase customer satisfaction and to compete with new products and services.

“While ngc4me.com is now an integral part of National Gypsum’s customer service, it was a big risk when we initiated it,” said Jack Rech, the company’s director of e-Commerce. “We did not know if customers would accept and welcome the use of online information and receiving transactions electronically. We thought we could build the system and manage it internally; however, that was not a proven fact. If we failed, we knew we would alienate customers. Receiving the CIO 100 Award is the culmination of a lot of teamwork as well as hard work and validation for a very successful project.”

“The Bold 100 honorees stand out because they have dared to take on risk for the chance of reward in an extremely conservative business climate,” said Abbie Lundberg, editor-in-chief, CIO magazine. “The executives leading these organizations are smart, inventive, and determined – I offer them my warmest congratulations.”

CIO magazine is published 23 times a year for information technology executives. It has a circulation of about 140,000 worldwide.

Headquartered in Charlotte, National Gypsum is a leading supplier of wallboard, interior finishing products, and cement board to the construction industry. It has a network of 20 wallboard plants in North America, in addition to interior finishing products and cement board plants, paper mills, and gypsum mines and quarries.
