National Gypsum Plant Recognized as Top U.S. Facility

IndustryWeek magazine today announced it has selected National Gypsum Company’s wallboard production plant in Apollo Beach, FL, as one of the 10 Best Plants in North America.

National Gypsum’s plant, located 20 miles south of Tampa, was one of 220 facilities nominated for the award between October 2004 and March 2005. The magazine began its Best Plants Award Program 16 years ago as a salute to outstanding manufacturing facilities demonstrating world-class capabilities and a management mindset of continuous improvement.

“This award validates our focus on manufacturing excellence,” said Thomas C. Nelson, chairman, president, and CEO. “We have invested heavily in operating state-of-the-art facilities with emphasis on safety, quality, customer service, innovation, and employee involvement. We are very proud of our associates and their Apollo Beach operations. I think this plant is among many of ours which could have caught the attention of IndustryWeek.”

The Apollo Beach plant produces gypsum wallboard at nearly 500 feet per minute or at a rate of five truckloads an hour. The plant is National Gypsum’s newest and began production in January 2001. While most wallboard plants start with gypsum rock, the Apollo Beach plant uses byproduct gypsum produced by Tampa Electric when it scrubs its sulfur dioxide emissions. That process yields calcium sulfate, the chemical name for gypsum.

“The caliber of this year’s class of winners is exceptional,” said IndustryWeek Editor-in-Chief Patricia Panchak. “Their world-class performances demonstrate the excellence that results from strong leadership, an engaged workforce, and outstanding improvement strategies. Manufacturing managers in search of world-class ideas would do well to emulate the techniques of our 2005 winners. IndustryWeek is proud to share their success stories.”

NGC’s Apollo Beach Plant will receive a commemorative award at ceremonies scheduled at the plant on October 12. To compete for the award the Apollo Beach plant submitted extensive information on practices and performance in such categories as management strategy, community involvement, customer and supplier relations, employee relations, environmental and safety programs, inventory management, manufacturing flexibility, productivity, use of technology, and market results.

Headquartered in Charlotte, NC, National Gypsum is a leading supplier of wallboard, interior finishing products, and cement board to the construction industry. It has a network of 20 wallboard plants in North America, in addition to interior finishing products and cement board plants, paper mills, and gypsum mines and quarries.
