National Gypsum to expand cement board operations
National Gypsum Company, a leading manufacturer of gypsum wallboard, announced today
it is expanding its PermaBase cement backerboard production near Montreal, Quebec.
The addition will increase capacity at the Canadian plant by 50 percent.
Cement backerboard is used as underlayment for tile floors, walls and countertops.
It is also used as sheathing and in exterior stucco systems. In 1998, National Gypsum
acquired Unifix, Inc., a Canadian manufacturer of cement backerboard with operations
in Bromont, Quebec. After the purchase, National Gypsum completed a plant near Jacksonville,
FL, and built two additional plants, one near Dallas, TX., and the other in Clinton,
IN.
“Since the acquisition, we have experienced strong demand for our cement board product,
particularly in the tile segment,” said Craig Robertson, general manager, cement
board. “PermaBase has a unique, patented edge, called EdgeTech. The strong, rounded
edges prevent cracking and crumbling during installation. These edges also protect
the board during transit and handling at the jobsite.”
Robertson said the Canadian expansion will support growth in North American markets
and as well as those in Europe and Asia.
Headquartered in Charlotte, NC, National Gypsum is a leading supplier of wallboard,
interior finishing products, and cement board to the construction industry. It has
a network of 20 wallboard plants in North America, in addition to interior finishing
products and cement board plants, paper mills, and gypsum mines and quarries.
